Graphic Design History: Diagram

For the Diagram, I had to pick a piece of "contemporary art," (anything made in the past year) and visually break it down and determine its influences from graphic design history. I chose a magazine cover for Mass Appeal, designed by Morning Breath Studios.

Locating Place: East Side Book

This was a book-making project for my Graphic Design 3 class. The assignment was to take pictures of a specific area of the "east side" of Austin, TX. We then had to come up with a concept for the book, based off of our research and experience with the area. I chose to focus on the small business aspect of the "east side,"

specifically family-owned convenience stores, or bodegas.

Postcard Flash

Stage 2 of my "Locating Place" project. This stage of the project was our intro to using Adobe Flash. We were to create a basic Flash sequence using two of our postcards from Stage 1. If you click on the word "Eastside," it will take you the second postcard where by clicking on the Mustang, it will loop you back to the beginning of the Flash sequence.

Locating Place: East Side Postcards

Stage 1 of the "Locating Place" project. After exploring and taking pictures of the "east side," our assignment was to generate six postcards based on our thoughts and findings. These postcards were based loosely on my chosen topic of small business in the "east side."

Found Type

*This typeface was created using miniature rawhide bones. Each Letter consists of one or two bones, depending on their size and/or complexity. By letting the bones sit in water for 10-15 minutes, they became soft and easily reconstructible. I was then able to shape and transform the bones into this letterset: BANK

Activity Booklet

Here I had to design a children's activity booklet for Fair Trade Coffee. We were limited to 2 spot colors and were given full text and imagery to incorporate throughout the booklet, as well as having to supply our own designs and images.

Critical Mass

The objective of this project was to visually tell a story of my choice. At the time of this project, the whole "Iraqi Reporter Throws A Shoe At Bush" story had just come out, so I figured what better story than this? Who throws a shoe?

Document

For this project I had to pick an object and document its connotative and denotative qualities through a saddle-stitched booklet. I decided to showcase silkscreen/screen printing equipment and supplies. We were to use no type, only imagery of said object.

Transformations

An old-school iPod, a Zippo, and a 1/4" guitar splitter-cable.

Scavenger Hunt

This was my first project for Image Methodology. A compositional test, I had to take six pictures of objects that were related to one another whether by color, design, layout, etc...

Identity Series

For this project I designed a hypothetical set of art museum passes in the form of buttons. We had to choose a certain movement/style from graphic design's history, and base our button and poster design around the period. I decided to focus on the International Design/Swiss Movement.

Instructional Design

For this project, I chose to create an instructional set of graphics for making scrambled eggs. This decal fits flush to the inside of the lid for a carton of a dozen eggs. When you open the egg carton, the decal is right-side up and easily legible, allowing the "egg-maker" to then accurately create scrambled eggs.

Kitchen of Meaning

The Kitchen of Meaning poster was one of the more intensive design projects for my Graphic Design 2 class. I had to convey through the poster the general idea or meaning of my given word: Zeitgeist. Literally meaning "spirit of the time," zeitgeist was a tough word for me to express since there were so many periods of time for me to base my poster. I ended up going with the late 1960-70's for my given time period, and tried to express that by stylizing the poster like one you would have seen for a concert back in the day.
