Locating Place: East Side Book

This was a book-making project for my Graphic Design 3 class. The assignment was to take pictures of a specific area of the "east side" of Austin, TX. We then had to come up with a concept for the book, based off of our research and experience with the area. I chose to focus on the small business aspect of the "east side,"

specifically family-owned convenience stores, or bodegas.

Activity Booklet

Here I had to design a children's activity booklet for Fair Trade Coffee. We were limited to 2 spot colors and were given full text and imagery to incorporate throughout the booklet, as well as having to supply our own designs and images.

Instructional Design

For this project, I chose to create an instructional set of graphics for making scrambled eggs. This decal fits flush to the inside of the lid for a carton of a dozen eggs. When you open the egg carton, the decal is right-side up and easily legible, allowing the "egg-maker" to then accurately create scrambled eggs.

Cognitive Map

For my cognitive map, I was able to get a little more abstract with my elements. This map represents expressions felt, as well as things seen on my trips between Austin and Houston. I wanted to focus specifically on how 'urban' both cities had become, along with match each city with what I felt it's corresponding color scheme. My reason for emphasizing each city in a graffiti-like style was due to my interest, at the time, in each city's distinct 'graffic' style.

Perceptual Map

For the Perceptual Map, I wanted to portray auditory and visual signals experienced throughout the drive. At the time of this piece, I was in a Reggae phase music-wise so I filled half the background sound waves with the traditional red, yellow, and green of the culture.

Artifact Map

The Artifact Map of our Personal Geography Project was the most literal of the three. The route I chose goes between my home in Houston and my apartment back in Austin. I opted to show only major highways in and around the path I take from Austin to Houston.

Symbol Methodology

For the Symbol Methodology project, we started by choosing a certain industry (such as Hydroelectricity or Agriculture) and creating 36 drawn sketches that best represent it. My chosen industry was Optics, so after deriving 33 vectors from my prior sketches, I mixed and matched them to create 12 relevant icons. From those 12, I then narrowed the list down to a good 9, and eventually a final 3. The symbols were supposed to effectively portray our given industry while still maintaining clarity in a 1x1 inch format.

Eagle

Supposedly our second project for Graphic Design 1 was to trace an image of an eagle, similar to the duck exercise. But I'm pretty sure my class didn't do this particular study, so in the meantime, here's Andrew Jackson's eagle. Smooth.
